I am really bad at office politics, and always have been; but they are apparently just part of any workplace and a University department is really no different in that respect. One thing you can say for locking a bunch of intelligent and impassioned academics in a small space (figuratively) is that it does lead to some fascinating debates.
And, whilst it would be highly unprofessional of me to say anything more specific than that, I will say that over the past few weeks I have often thought that an English department would be the basis of an amazing "Mad Men"-esque drama series. Not necessarily set in the sixties, but full of intelligent people being witty and erudite with a lot of complicated motives and machinations.
