I know I have blogged a lot about the Playstation 2 since we got the thing, but that's because I'm relatively new to gaming and so I am only just discovering that it is really fun.
One thing I hadn't fully realised before is how good the Doc is at computer games. He's really, really, good. When he gets into The Zone, those avatars do not stand a chance.
At first this was annoying, for example when ever (not "if", "when") I was really struggling to get past a level on a game, Doc C would watch me for a while and then politely ask if he could have a go at it. Without fail he would ask what the controls are, do a few practise moves and then say "Oh, I see what the pattern is." and beat the game. This was especially annoying because he would do it without any of the swearing, or gurning, that I was finding myself doing whilst failing miserably.
But then it became clear that he would do this purely so he could explain to me what I needed to do, not so he could show off his mad skills.
One game in particular that I have doesn't seem to know when enough is a good thing. It will give you a task to do, but once you've completed it you have to do exactly the same thing again, and again. It's really annoying. Particularly as in the last repetition it speeds things up and I know that I'm quite simply not quick enough to beat it, perhaps because, as a girl, I don't have years of training behind me. With practise I am getting better, but the necessary thumb speed isn't there yet.
What I've learnt to do now in those instances is give it a really good try and then admit gracefully that I should just hand the controller over to the Doc, and he will very kindly help me out. And he does it without being a jerk or teasing me about it about it as many people would do.
That's not cheating, it's team work.
