I've been thinking about doing something with the masthead space, and it suddenly struck me how cool the Campus Queen would look if she were green.
Hello Photoshop, how are you?
I turned her green, flipped the image round so the lettering would be on the left and they'd still be looking at it. I also re-used the lettering from Campus Queen, just cut and pasted it around a bit. I turned the background white, because it became clear there was too much variation in the original background colour for me to move things around unobtrusively. Then I tinted the whole thing a pinky grey colour, so that it wasn't quite so clean looking.
Long story short, after about 12 hours of fiddling around with effects and variations later, we have a banner with an actual image.
I'm not 100% happy with it yet, but for a first attempt it's ok. The main thing I'd like to try and do is match the colours I use in the banner to the colour template that TypePad gives me to choose the rest of the site from. Once I've worked out how to do that, and how to size things properly...
**Postscript** Since putting the banner up, I have changed it back from the pinky grey tint to white and I can see I'm going to be fiddling with it for ages yet. I can't quite get the Queen and her consort to appear exactly where I want them to, which is on the right but unaffected by smaller screen sizes. Hmmm.
