I've just finished reading "Marianne Dreams" by Catherine Storr, a kid's book which was written in the late fifties and I've read several times since being given it as a child. The recurring dream described in the book is the basis for the whole plot, and it gets really quite dark in places.
Apparently I start dreaming pretty much as soon as I fall asleep, and the Doc knows this because I start twitching, or talking. Sometimes he has to wake me up because I'm getting agitated or I'm physically fighting something. I don't remember what I've dreamt every night, but I quite often have very cinematic dreams, and they sometimes even have theme music over opening or closing credits.
Recently I dreamt a children's book worthy story about tiny stranded aliens, and making rockets for them out of cereal packets and elastic bands.
When I overheat in my sleep I have nightmares, or more accurately, anxiety dreams. As a kid, I had dreams about being chased by big grey wolves, the most memorable was running away down our back garden path towards my parents, who were digging with spades & forks. I turned to look over my shoulder to see how close the wolf is, but when I turned back the people digging aren't my parents and they don't care if I get eaten. I haven't had a wolf dream in a while though, I seem to have grown out of that.
Now, there are three that I have most frequently:
- My teeth are doing weird things. Usually it feels like I have far too many and my mouth is overcrowded with them, then they start to feel wobbly and there are some odd sharp bits, before they fall out. That one is fairly common, I think.
- Being left. This is obviously horrible, and I always wake up a bit tearful from it. The Doctor always gives me a big hug when I've had this one and tells me not to be silly.
- I am about to sit a Classical Civilisations A Level exam. I try explaining that I haven't studied Classical Civilisations for over a decade, and that I've been too busy working to revise but nobody will listen to me. I know that I'm going to do really badly in the exam, and I get more worried as I get closer to the exam room, I always wake up before I actually sit down and see the test paper though.
There's also a whole town that I dream about that seems to be made up of odd parts of Norwich, Derby & Brighton but with extra bits of overgrown wasteland and a really complicated system of subway tunnels, which is also the shopping centre and hotel. I tend to be trying to get from one side of the town to the other as quickly as possible, this can be a good dream or it can be an anxiety dream, usually depending on which bit of town I'm in.
I also often have dreams about playing with kittens, but that really is just wishful thinking.
